Weld Neck Flange for High-Pressure Pipeline Connections: A Complete Engineering Guide

2026-09-26 12:51:23

Selecting a flange connection for high-pressure service is never about finding the cheapest component — it is about eliminating the risk of a catastrophic leak. The weld neck flange, sometimes written as welding neck flange, is the reference solution for critical lines because its long tapered hub transfers stress smoothly from the flange ring into the pipe wall. In refineries, power plants and chemical facilities, that geometry is the difference between a joint that survives decades of thermal cycling and one that weeps at the first upset.

Flange for High-Pressure

Why the Tapered Hub Outperforms Other Flange Types

A weld neck flange is butt-welded to the pipe with a single full-penetration groove weld. The hub thickness transitions gradually from the weld bevel to the flange ring, which:

  • reduces the stress concentration factor at the joint by comparison with a slip-on or plate flange;

  • gives excellent fatigue resistance under pressure and temperature fluctuation;

  • avoids the crevice between pipe and bore that causes under-deposit corrosion;

  • allows radiographic or ultrasonic examination of the weld itself, unlike fillet-welded designs.

The smooth bore also reduces turbulence and erosion, making the type suitable for high-velocity, toxic or flammable media.

Pressure Classes and Dimensional Standards

StandardSize rangePressure classesTypical market
ASME B16.51/2"–24"Class 150 / 300 / 400 / 600 / 900 / 1500 / 2500Americas, Middle East, global oil & gas
ASME B16.47 (Series A / B)26"–60"Class 150–900Large-diameter transmission and water
EN 1092-1 / DINDN10–DN4000PN6–PN100Europe
JIS B222010A–1500A5K / 10K / 16K / 20K / 30KJapan, parts of Asia
GB / HG / JBDN10–DN3000PN seriesChina domestic projects

Pressure–temperature ratings are not interchangeable between standards. A Class 300 flange is not the same component as a PN40 flange, and mixing ratings within one joint is a recurring source of field leaks.

Facing Types

  • Raised face (RF) – the most widely used facing; concentrates gasket load on a narrow ring.

  • Flat face (FF) – required when mating with cast iron equipment or brittle materials that cannot take a raised-face bending load.

  • Ring-type joint (RTJ) – metal-to-metal sealing with an oval or octagonal ring for Class 900 and above and for sour or high-temperature service.

  • Tongue and groove / male-female – specialist applications needing precise gasket containment.

Material Selection

Forged carbon steel flange material to ASTM A105 or A105N remains the default for non-corrosive service up to about 425°C, while A350 LF2 covers low-temperature duty to −46°C. Corrosive, hygienic or high-temperature services move to stainless stainless steel weld neck flange forgings such as ASTM A182 F304/F304L, F316/F316L, F321 and F347, with duplex F51/F53 specified where chloride pitting and high strength coincide.

Manufacturing and Heat Treatment

Quality starts at the forging press. Controlled forging refines the grain flow so it follows the hub contour, after which normalizing, quenching and tempering or solution annealing brings the mechanical properties into specification. CNC machining then generates the facing finish — typically 125–250 µin Ra concentric or spiral serrated for a raised face — and the bolt holes are drilled on the correct bolt circle and orientation relative to the weld centreline.

Inspection and Documentation

Buyers should require material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, positive material identification (PMI) on alloy flanges, dimensional verification to the applicable standard, and NDT (UT on the forging, MT/PT on the bevel and facing) when specified by the project. Traceability from heat number to finished flange is what makes a leak investigation possible years later.

Common field error: ordering a weld neck flange whose bore does not match the pipe schedule. Always state the pipe schedule — a Class 300 flange for SCH 40 pipe has a different bore than one for SCH 160.

Hebei Tianlong Pipeline Equipment Co., Ltd. manufactures and stocks these fittings in carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy steel to GB, ANSI, JIS, DIN and BS standards, with in-house forging, heat treatment, machining and non-destructive testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I choose a weld neck flange instead of a slip-on flange?

Use a weld neck flange whenever pressure is above roughly Class 300, when temperature cycles significantly, when the fluid is toxic, flammable or lethal, or when the joint must be radiographed. Slip-on and plate flanges suit low-pressure utility, water and air service where cost dominates.

What is the difference between Class 150 and PN16?

They are different rating systems and are not equivalent. Class ratings come from ASME B16.5 and vary with temperature, while PN ratings come from EN 1092-1. Always mate flanges of the same standard and rating, and confirm the gasket is rated for both.

Can a weld neck flange be supplied with an RTJ facing?

Yes. RTJ facings with octagonal or oval ring grooves are standard for high-pressure classes and for sour service, and are machined to the groove dimensions in ASME B16.20 together with the matching ring gasket.
